Villeneuve takes Ridley Scott's neo-noir bones and makes a quiet character study out of them. K's slow-burning realization that he is not the chosen one is the film's emotional climax. The world tells him he matters, then takes it back, and he does the right thing anyway.
Roger Deakins' photography is the most beautiful argument I've seen for the camera as a thinking instrument: every frame holds a thought.
